Lesson Five: Spiritual Self Defense

Welcome to Lesson Five!

So far we’ve been talking about deception. But it’s also important to acknowledge that …

1. Some negative emotions originate in truth

The emotions of angers, sadness, and guilt can all originate in truth.

Let me introduce that concept with this video:

If you can’t see the video on your screen, here’s a link so you can watch it on YouTube.

I go into more detail in the textbook on pages 69–74 (top).

Let’s take a few moments to process that reading with the “Check your understanding” questions on pages 79-80, specifically questions 4, 5, 6, 7.

Speaking of question 7, our group got into a discussion on that. Here it is:

Let me recommend that you also go through the “Group discussion” questions on pages 80-81, specifically questions 6, 7 with your group and/or the Facebook group.

2. Spiritual bullies use deception to ruin your life

We’ve almost finished laying down the fundamentals of Spiritual Self Defense. We’ll get into actual techniques in later lessons, but first I wanted to circle back and take a look at a variety of spiritual bullies and see how the concepts we’ve been discussing relate to them.

Details are in your textbook, pages 74–79.

I do want to add this: Obviously, in this course, we don’t have the time or space to go into great detail on each bully and explore all the dynamics related to each one. And clearly other dynamics besides deception can enter the picture. For example, medications or medical issues can cause or contribute to sexual dysfunction. Homelessness is not solved by truth experiences alone; other types of intervention are needed. And so on. But when underlying deception is dealt with, all of these bullies become much more manageable, much easier to defeat, 99% of the time.

Take a few moments to process this information by completing the “Check your understanding” (pages 79-80) question 8; “Group discussion” (pages 80–81) questions 8, 9, 10; and “Journal” (page 81) question 3. As always, if you are studying this with a partner or a group, I encourage you to get together to discuss the “Group discussion” questions. If you are studying on your own (or in a group), please feel free to connect via our private Facebook group.

You made it! Lesson Five complete!
Since truth is the antidote for deception, in Lesson Six, we’ll begin to explore how to verify and recognize truth. If you’re going to have a truth experience with Jesus, you need to be able to distinguish between counterfeits and the real thing.
Look forward to seeing you next time!
Dwight
