Lesson Nine: Spiritual Self Defense

Welcome to Lesson Nine!

How to hear the voice of God

I wanted to devote an entire lesson to this because I feel it is such an important topic. If you have received new life from Jesus Christ, then God is your Father, and every good father wants a real relationship with his child. Relationship means communication. It means God hears from you, and you hear from God. You have a conversation together. And it’s pretty hard to have a conversation, if you can’t hear what the other person is saying.

God does speak. He has spoken to us through His word. We’ll be discussing that more next lesson, but I do hope you have developed a healthy appetite for God’s word, the Bible. Our lives are immeasurably enriched as we hear what He has to say to us through the Bible. And He speaks to us through His Spirit. Sometimes that happens when we’re reading the Bible—a certain passage “comes alive” like never before. But, in addition to all that, God enjoys talking with us about everyday stuff—our plans, our hopes, our fears, our experiences, our relationships, our goals, whatever.

In our reading (pages 111–115), we look at how to hear the voice of God. If you’re new to this (as I once was), it isn’t spooky, it isn’t weird, it’s just a normal part of a relationship with our heavenly Father.
