Personal Growth
When I was a young man, I asked many questions. "What is the purpose of the church?" "What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?" "How does the Christian life make a difference when I'm - say - driving down the Interstate?"
I kept asking questions like these because it took me a long time to realize that my questions were irritating most people. Nobody likes being pulled out of their comfort zone and forced to re-examine the things we all take for granted.
But God is in the business of taking all of us out of our comfort zone. Much of the Christian life is God gently pulling us out of denial so we can take an honest look at ourselves and our helplessness apart from him.
I used to think that the Christian life was about obedience. The more obedient you were, the better Christian you were. I no longer believe that. Don't misunderstand me: I'm not saying that we should disobey, I'm merely saying that the Christian life is about much much more than obedience just like the gospel is about much much more than forgiveness of sins.
How do we grow? Mostly we plod along until God delivers to us one of those "aha" moments, when everything changes. People call it a paradigm shift. Yesterday the whole world was red, today it is green because we are seeing with different eyes.
How do we get to those "aha" moments? We need to bring God into our own desperate neediness. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus tells us that He is knocking at the door and it is up to us to open the door. I used to think that this was a verse on how to "get saved" or become a Christian. No, this verse is much bigger than that. This is a verse on how to live as a Christian. Every day we open new doors to Christ.
I begin this section of the website with my article "In Defense of Theophostic® (see index below), because Theophostic® for me has proven to be the most powerful tool that God has used to bring me again and again to those "aha" moments of growth.
Lord willing, I will stock this section of the site soon with articles on moral purity, prayer, healing from sexual abuse and many other topics of growth.
The Christian life is an adventure. It isn't something you plan and prescribe. Rather, it is a succession of discoveries and surprises orchestrated by Someone who is far wiser than we are.
Enjoy!
